From Open Culture, a great collection of philosophy courses to help us lead the examined life.

Download 90 Free Philosophy Courses and Start Living the Examined Life

May 19th, 2013 | in Online Courses, Philosophy

The Philosophy section of our big Free Online Courses collection just went through another update, and it now features 90 courses. Enough to give you a soup-to-nuts introduction to a timeless discipline. You can start with one of several introductory courses.
Then, once you’ve found your footing, you can head off in some amazing directions. As we mentioned many moons ago, you can access courses and lectures by modern day legends – Michel Foucault, Bertrand Russell, John Searle, Walter Kaufmann, Leo Strauss, Hubert Dreyfus and Michael Sandel. Then you can sit back and let them introduce you to the thinking of Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, Hobbes, Hegel, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, Kant, Nietzsche, Sartre and the rest of the gang. The courses listed here are generally available via YouTube, iTunes, or the web.

Explore our collection of 700 Free Courses to find topics in many other disciplines — History, Literature, Physics, Computer Science and beyond. As we like to say, it’s the most valuable single page on the web.

Find us on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus and we’ll make it easy to share intelligent media with your friends!

Susan Piver - Start Here Now: Beginning a Meditation Practice — A Free Webinar

On April 10 (Wednesday) from 1 pm to 2:15 pm EDT (Show in my Time Zone), Buddhist teacher and author Susan Piver is offering a FREE introduction to Beginning a Meditation Practice. Susan is the author of How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life: Opening Your Heart to Confidence, Intimacy, and Joy, The Wisdom of a Broken Heart: How to Turn the Pain of a Breakup into Healing, Insight, and New Love, and many other books.

She is a wonderful, compassionate teacher - if this is a class you can use, sign up now.

START HERE NOW: BEGINNING A MEDITATION PRACTICE — A FREE WEBINAR

I became a Buddhist and started practicing meditation in 1995. 10 years later, I became a meditation teacher. First as a student and now as a teacher, I have seen over and over again how helpful, important, and profound this simple practice is. I feel so strongly about this that in 2011 I started The Open Heart Project, an online meditation community. Currently, around ten thousand people sit down to meditate with me every day. Throughout all of these experiences, I’ve learned what the most common questions are and about the obstacles we all encounter–and their antidotes. I want to share some of this with you during this 75-minute free webinar. I hope to hear your questions and offer helpful answers!

TOPICS
  • What is meditation?
  • What is it not?
  • The most common misconceptions
  • The obstacles we all encounter and how to overcome them
  • A review of the various styles and how to choose the one that is right for you
  • How to begin–where, what, how long, how often?
  • Where to go for support
  • And whatever you’d like to bring up.
Attendance is actually limited (seriously!) so please sign up now. Many people are interested in meditation but don’t know where to begin, so I expect this will fill up fast. It will be recorded. I hope to see you there!

65 Massive Open Online Courses Launch in January

Very cool.

65 MOOCs/Certificate Courses Getting Started in January
January 7th, 2013
January — it’s a time for New Year’s resolutions and for university courses to get started again. It’s happening on campuses. And it’s happening online. Right now, the biggest batch of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are getting underway: 65 courses in total, across seven different online platforms. Below, we’ve highlighted a sampling of courses, but you can scan through the complete list of January courses right here, and keep tabs on all future MOOCs here. Please keep in mind that many MOOCs offer “Certificates” or “Statements of Accomplishment.” The key on this page indicates the kind of credential offered by each course. It goes without saying that these courses are free. The video above introduces the course The Modern World: Global History Since 1760.
There are some good courses starting in February, as well.
