What is frustrating is that I have read articles and books on schizophrenia and it is annoying to hear so many people give their two cents about what they think the hallucination stems from. The truth is no one knows. However, everyone experiencing auditory hallucinations is telling you that it's an external source, and for some reason, every doctor keeps ignoring what the person with schizophrenia is saying. This is frustrating. Investigators who studied adult victims of childhood rape or incest, have also reported finding problems not captured in "PTSD". Instead, these victims appeared to have a compromised sense of safety, self-worth, and deficits in the the capacity to regulate emotions or “self-soothe”. Victims of prolonged abuse often continue to feel and behave as victims - because the sense of danger they felt when they were in the abusive situation never passed from their consciousness, awareness, or memory. Throughout their lives, they describe themselves as feeling “emotionally dead inside” while others experience them as being detached.

From a “Self-Psychology” perspective, these victims have been robbed of their “good self-objects” and, as a result, cannot “self-soothe.” (Brian Trappler - The effects of prolonged Psychological trauma and abuse: A Collection of Essays, Author House, 2014).brian trapplerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15998154717261113498noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13617569.post-70798805856894730132022-05-30T18:32:34.598-07:002022-05-30T18:32:34.598-07:00This has so many similarities to Aspergers! This has so many similarities to Aspergers!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13617569.post-29624963838663712252022-05-28T08:14:07.479-07:002022-05-28T08:14:07.479-07:00LMFAOLMFAOAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13617569.post-19531225667228410582022-03-02T03:42:25.255-07:002022-03-02T03:42:25.255-07:00Very nice post.

I balked and told the therapist that the whole process doesn’t work when you are sitting next to an experienced manipulator.. Oh look your husband is really feeling empathy he gets you! The only thing I got out of this therapist is the rigidity of the program over the actual issues. Ten years ago yes maybe I’d be open to Imago but now it’s just condescending and trendy.

I’d be thrilled if anyone here could suggest another kind of therapy because I really want to make it work. And, the dialogueing turned out to be amazing. My husband and I were in therapy and 12 step recovery for some pretty intense stuff. We went to an Imago workshop, and I think it turned out to be my favorite, most transformational form of therapy. Certainly, the scripted instructions felt pretty rigid at first. I probably wondered what silly thing we were embarking upon. But as we actually used the dialogue technique..it turned out to be almost magical. For instance, the mirroring instructions had us repeating verbatum what our partner had said. As frustrating as this might sound, it proved its powerfulness almost immediately. As we repeated each others words...guess what..? We often, repeated a wrong word, a wrong verb...that completely changed the meaning. We found out that we were not as good as we thought, at listening carefully. Another thing that happened often, was as we repeated the words, the speaking partner was able to hear their own words, realize that they were not quite right, and then actually correct them. To have my partner listen to me...THAT carefully, was in itself incredibly healing. A by product of this careful listening was that I never had to over emphasize a feeling or point. No repeating, or raising of my voice..because there is no push back. So then, as my partner went further...sumarizing, and empathizing...wow!!! He would actually talk the time and mental energy to imagine how this thing...made me feel. We almost didn't need to even seek solutions..just being so thoroughly heard, was most often all I needed. Curiously, I had thought that I was a very good listener previously. But my husband was as relieved and happy with this new process, as I was. In other words...he was finally feeling heard also. There is something incredibly powerful in being able to; take turns, truly, carefully listen, and take the effort to empathize. I had never experienced anything like this. Well yes, my therapist listens this well..but of course I am not married to her! Ultimately my husband and I were able to use this process on our own, and we could talk about the most amazingly difficult subjects one could imagine. And the other would...listen. Empathize. With practice, this was anything but stilted or scripted. It was the safe structure we could use...to share anything and everything. Perhaps if you had gone back the second day, you might have had a similar experience..?? Understanding Imago theory, as a theory, again, is interesting. But dialogueing as an experience is where the rubber meets the road...so to speak. My viewpoint is that life and relationships are way too complicated and that a simple template that dictates dialogueas a cure all is certainly not enough to appreciate and be an answer to those complexities. However I did find the tools useful in that they allowed me to understand that there is more than one form of communicating with someone. Sure, I found the mirroring and validating irritating, but it proposed an alternative. I don't feel I have to use it as dogmatically as presented, it's something I can work with and make my own and that's fine with me. I think all our rejection of the techniques are perhaps systematic of not being willing to adapt current lifestyles that are potentially damaging to your relationship. No one is forcing you to be a slave to the system. If something resonated, use it. If not, try something else. The insistence of criticising the process is, to me, a bit of insecurity that ironically, if you allowed some of the process in, would be addressed Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08137687730301090811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13617569.post-65786614802047081922013-04-18T20:47:22.869-07:002013-04-18T20:47:22.869-07:00Great advice. As Director of of the NIMH he sets the tone for research in this country, which when money is limited (as it is now, when Congress deems research as unnecessary) can become a serious issue.

He is much less likely to support funding for integrative or biopsychosocial research into mental illness (which is where the clinical work is moving), but anything that proposes a genetic or bio-chemical explanation of mental illness is much more likely to get funded.

I see this as a huge problem. That is the basis for my concerns.

Billwilliam harrymanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06981478282688361274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13617569.post-40440413375837631172013-04-18T18:55:33.905-07:002013-04-18T18:55:33.905-07:00Bill, I do not understand your harsh objection to ...Bill, I do not understand your harsh objection to the viddy. At its end, Insel advocates for early intervention for predictable behavioral disorders. I don't see that he is precluding therapeutic intervention.

Yes, certainly, Insel looks as brain-development as the measure of early onset of problems, with his example relating to schizophrenia -- which, likely, is not typical of other mental illness, generally. But this is a short viddie, providing just the nut of what is going on, for the benefit of uninitiated folk, like myself.

I don't see that Insel is being reductionist; he is just using what available evidence there is.
