Realizing Buddha’s Full Moon of Enlightenment
Speakers: Sensei Kaz Tanahashi & Roshi Joan Halifax
On this first day of Rohatsu sesshin, Kaz Sensei begins by pointing out our shared experience as humans. Roshi Joan adds stories that illustrate how, in spite of suffering, there can be great joy and great awakening. The Buddha himself became a “positive deviant,” Roshi continues, who had to leave his comfortable surroundings in order to find the the truth of suffering. We, too, must enter the field of not-knowing, and thereby realize natural joy. In sesshin, this field consists of our internal world free from distractions and commentary. The truth of suffering and the end of suffering is within us, as the Buddha discovered, and ultimately urges us to benefit others.
