I'm sure there's an explanation, something about the way the brain is wired, and probably something something about same hemisphere activity and hand motions being dominant over foot motions.
So I tried clockwise circles with my left foot and drawing the number six in the air with my right hand, and sure enough, no impact on foot motion. So my conjecture is that the counter clockwise movement of the hand at the beginning of drawing the six in the air changes the foot direction because both motions involve the same hemisphere of the brain, and hand motions get priority over foot motions.
