John Dunne: 7-22-11: Mind And Meditation: The Self Beyond Thought (Part 1 of 8)
Speaker: John Dunne
Recorded: Friday Jul 22, 2011
This is a unique time in the history of Buddhism. Different Buddhist traditions are meeting and interacting with one another here in the West, often for the first time in centuries. Just as the dharma spread from India through many countries in Asia, each one finding its own voice, here, too, we’re seeing the emergence of a Western Buddhism, something that is unique to our own time and culture.” “One Dharma” by Joseph Goldstein.
During this weekend we will explore the different Buddhist schools and their approach to the nature of mind. We will study the various Buddhist accounts of mind and self and why these accounts are so crucial to freedom from suffering and happiness. The question then would be how these accounts are realized in contemplative practice and how that is converging in what Joseph Goldstein calls the “One Dharma” in American Buddhism.
During the weekend John Dunne will teach Buddhist Philosophy and the Dharma in his brilliant and humorous way, which makes it easily accessible for western practitioners. Appropriate for beginners and long time practitioners. Sensei Beate will lead morning and evening meditation and will give meditation instructions.
