Gratitude 9/18/07 -- New Poem

Arrival

Say it! No ideas but in things.
~ William Carlos Williams, "Paterson"

Around sunset the hummingbirds gather
at the feeder, possessive, selfish,
messengers of encroaching darkness.

Quiet rabbits huddle beneath cholla,
staking claim to a prickly cover
in the face of falling sun.

The desert hums with the fading
light, each creature seeking
safety, shelter, and food.

Only I watch so passively, sipping
ice water in my green plastic chair,
waiting for the cool blanket of night.

When finally the sky is black,
punctured by small pins of light,
my body relaxes, secure in this arrival.
