Poem: Chih Yuan

cranes[1]

Lost Cranes

The pair
Of cranes suddenly
Flew off, their pure notes
Heard no more.

Perhaps
They’re far away,
Obliged to seek immortal
Company, or close by, idly anxious
To avoid the chicken-flock. The lakebank
Quiet, water-watching’s over, the courtyard
Empty, they’ve finished
The Cloud Dance.

All that’s left
Are some old tracks
Like ancient writing, pressed
In the patterns
Of moss.
