What a wonderful...Thank you, thank you, thank you. What a wonderful blog to find. This is a very serious problem and I really appreciate you bringing it to the fore.

I'm a counselor who struggles daily with the medical model mindset. One of my pet peeves is PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is a normal reaction by a normal person to an abnormal person. Yet we insist on diagnosing it as a "mental illness" and medicating it. People with trauma are not mentally ill. They need help adjusting, not pills.

I face the same problem with "ADHD". I work in a homeless shelter with chronically homeless families. Most of the children are diagnosed with "ADHD". They are anxious and restless and have difficulty sitting still and listening. But they move from shelter to shelter and from housing program to housing program constantly. They change schools, on average, twice per year. They move, on average, every 90 days. THIS is the cause of their restless, unsettled behavior. But instead of addressing the source of the behavior (i.e. making their home life more stable) we medicate the child.

It truly is maddening. Thank you again for your wonderful blog!Kellenhttp://www.kellevision.comnoreply@blogger.com
